Skin Boosters: what it is, what to expect and where to find it
What is Skin Boosters?
Skin boosters are injectable treatments that place small amounts of a substance, such as lightly cross-linked hyaluronic acid or polynucleotides, across the skin to improve hydration, texture and glow rather than to add volume. Profhilo, Skinvive and Rejuran are product names often used for this category.
How Skin Boosters works
Instead of lifting one area like a filler, a skin booster is spread through the treated zone in many small deposits or a few larger points that the product then spreads from. Hyaluronic acid boosters draw water into the skin, while polynucleotide products are marketed to support the skin's own repair processes. Courses usually involve a few sessions spaced several weeks apart, then occasional maintenance.
What to expect at the appointment
- A skin assessment and a talk about whether a booster, a filler or another treatment suits your goal.
- Cleansing and numbing cream on the face, neck, hands or other area being treated.
- A series of small injections across the area, taking a short time overall.
- Advice to avoid makeup, heat and heavy exercise for the rest of the day.
Recovery and downtime
Small bumps at the injection points are normal and usually flatten within a day or two. Redness and minor bruising can last a little longer.
Safety and suitability
- Boosters improve skin quality; they do not lift sagging skin or replace lost volume.
- Some products are approved for use in some countries but not in others, so ask what exactly will be injected.
- Mention allergies, including to fish products for polynucleotides, plus skin infections and blood thinners.
- Results tend to be subtle and build over a course of sessions.
Questions to ask before you book
- Which product is this, and is it approved for this use where I live?
- How many sessions do you suggest, and how far apart?
- Who will perform the injections?
- What results are realistic for my skin?
Skin Boosters FAQ
Are skin boosters the same as fillers?
They use related ingredients but a different approach. Fillers add volume or shape to one area, while boosters are spread through the skin to improve hydration and texture without changing the shape of the face.
How many skin booster sessions are usually needed?
Most clinics suggest a short course of sessions a few weeks apart, followed by occasional maintenance. The exact plan depends on the product used and the condition of your skin.
Where can skin boosters be used?
Common areas are the face, neck, chest and backs of the hands. Your provider will tell you which areas the chosen product is intended for.
