Lip Filler: what it is, what to expect and where to find it
What is Lip Filler?
Lip filler is a dermal filler treatment, usually with a hyaluronic acid gel, that adds volume, shape or definition to the lips or smooths fine lines around the mouth. A lip flip is a different treatment that uses a small amount of neuromodulator to relax the muscle around the upper lip.
How Lip Filler works
The injector places small amounts of gel into the body of the lips, along the border or at the corners, depending on the goal. Hyaluronic acid draws in water and gives a soft, natural-feeling plumpness. Lips move constantly, so lip filler is broken down by the body sooner than filler in some other areas.
What to expect at the appointment
- A conversation about the shape and size you want, often using photos to guide the plan.
- Numbing cream on the lips; many fillers also contain local anaesthetic.
- Several small injections, with massage to shape the product.
- Ice and aftercare advice, including avoiding kissing, straws and strenuous exercise for a short time.
Recovery and downtime
Lips are usually noticeably swollen for a few days, sometimes uneven while swelling settles, and bruising is common. The final look is clearer once swelling has gone.
Safety and suitability
- Cold sores can flare after lip injections, so tell the provider if you get them.
- Overfilling or migration of filler above the lip border can happen; a conservative approach can be built up over time.
- Rare vascular complications need urgent treatment, so ask about the clinic's emergency plan.
- Avoid lip filler shortly before dental work or if you have an infection near the mouth.
Questions to ask before you book
- How much filler do you suggest for a first treatment?
- Which product do you use for lips, and can it be dissolved?
- What happens if the result looks uneven after the swelling settles?
- Who performs lip injections at your clinic?
Lip Filler FAQ
How long does lip filler swelling last?
Most of the swelling goes down within several days, though it can take a little longer to settle completely. Plan treatment well ahead of important events.
What is a lip flip?
A lip flip uses a small amount of neuromodulator such as Botox near the upper lip so the lip rolls slightly outwards. It does not add volume, unlike lip filler.
Can lip filler be removed?
Hyaluronic acid lip filler can usually be dissolved by a qualified provider using an enzyme called hyaluronidase.
