RF Microneedling: what it is, what to expect and where to find it

    What is RF Microneedling?

RF microneedling combines microneedling with radiofrequency energy delivered through insulated or uninsulated needles. It is used for skin laxity, texture, enlarged pores and acne scars on the face and body. Morpheus8, Potenza and Vivace are common device names.

    How RF Microneedling works

Needles penetrate the skin to a chosen depth and then release radiofrequency energy, which heats the tissue below the surface. The combination of tiny punctures and deeper heat stimulates collagen and tightening. Because the energy is delivered below the surface, providers can adjust depth for different areas and concerns.

What to expect at the appointment

    1. A consultation and a plan for needle depth and energy settings.
    2. Numbing cream applied for a good while beforehand; some clinics also offer other pain relief.
    3. Passes of the handpiece across the area, with heat and pressure sensations.
    4. Aftercare advice on gentle cleansing, avoiding makeup briefly and sun protection.

    Recovery and downtime

Redness, swelling and a grid of tiny marks are common for a few days. Deeper treatments can mean more swelling and a longer recovery.

    Safety and suitability

    • Implanted electronic devices and some metal implants may rule out radiofrequency.
    • Darker skin tones can be treated with suitable settings, but there is a risk of pigment changes.
    • Possible side effects include burns, grid marks that linger, infection and, rarely, scarring.
    • A series of sessions is usually recommended.

Questions to ask before you book

    • Which device do you use, and what depths will you treat?
    • How is pain managed during the treatment?
    • How many sessions do you suggest for my concern?
    • What results are realistic for my degree of laxity or scarring?
