PRP Hair Restoration: what it is, what to expect and where to find it

    What is PRP Hair Restoration?

PRP hair restoration involves injecting platelet-rich plasma, prepared from your own blood, into areas of the scalp with thinning hair. Medical spas also offer related scalp treatments such as Keravive, a cleansing and exfoliating scalp facial. These approaches are mainly used for gradual, pattern-type thinning.

    How PRP Hair Restoration works

Blood is drawn and spun to concentrate platelets, which carry growth factors involved in tissue repair. The concentrated plasma is injected into the scalp where hair is thinning, with the aim of supporting hair follicles. Results vary between people, and PRP is often combined with other hair-loss treatments suggested by a doctor.

What to expect at the appointment

    1. A consultation to understand the cause of hair loss, which may include blood tests or a referral.
    2. A blood draw, then processing of the sample in a centrifuge.
    3. Numbing of the scalp and a series of small injections across the thinning area.
    4. Advice to avoid washing the hair and strenuous exercise for a short time.

    Recovery and downtime

The scalp may be tender, swollen or slightly sore for a short while. Most people return to normal activities quickly.

    Safety and suitability

    • Hair loss has many causes, including thyroid problems, iron deficiency and scarring conditions, so diagnosis comes first.
    • Not suitable for people with certain blood or platelet disorders or scalp infections.
    • A series of sessions and maintenance treatments are usually needed.
    • Results are typically gradual and are judged over months.

Questions to ask before you book

    • How do you work out the cause of my hair loss before treatment?
    • How many sessions do you recommend, and how far apart?
    • Should PRP be combined with other treatments for me?
    • Who performs the scalp injections?

    PRP Hair Restoration FAQ

Does PRP work for hair loss?

Some people with pattern hair thinning see improvement, but results vary and evidence is still developing. It tends to work better for thinning hair than for areas that are already bald.

    What is Keravive?

Keravive is a branded scalp treatment that uses a device to cleanse, exfoliate and hydrate the scalp. It is a scalp care service rather than an injection-based treatment like PRP.

    Are PRP scalp injections painful?

They can be uncomfortable. Clinics use numbing methods such as cold, vibration or local anaesthetic to reduce discomfort.
