Lymphatic Drainage: what it is, what to expect and where to find it

    What is Lymphatic Drainage?

Lymphatic drainage is a gentle massage technique, done by hand or with devices such as compression boots, intended to encourage the movement of lymph fluid. At medical spas it is popular after cosmetic surgery, for puffiness and as a relaxing body treatment.

    How Lymphatic Drainage works

The lymphatic system carries fluid back towards the heart through vessels just under the skin. Manual lymphatic drainage uses light, rhythmic strokes in a set direction to help that flow, rather than the deep pressure of a sports massage. Machine-based options use air compression. Medical lymphatic therapy for lymphedema is a specialist treatment delivered by certified therapists.

What to expect at the appointment

    1. A short intake about your health, recent surgery and goals.
    2. Lying comfortably while the therapist uses light, repetitive strokes or a compression device.
    3. A calm session that many people find relaxing.
    4. Advice to drink water and perhaps use compression garments if you have had surgery.

    Recovery and downtime

There is no downtime. Some people notice they need to urinate more often afterwards.

    Safety and suitability

    • After surgery, check timing with your surgeon before booking.
    • It is not suitable during an active infection, with blood clots, with uncontrolled heart failure or with some kidney conditions.
    • Lymphedema needs care from a certified lymphedema therapist rather than a spa massage.
    • Ask about the therapist's specific training in lymphatic techniques.

Questions to ask before you book

    • What training does the therapist have in lymphatic drainage?
    • Do you work with patients recovering from surgery, and do you coordinate with surgeons?
    • Is this manual or machine-based?
    • How many sessions do people usually book?

    Lymphatic Drainage FAQ

    Is lymphatic drainage massage painful?

It should not hurt. The technique uses very light pressure, which feels quite different from a deep-tissue massage.

Why is lymphatic drainage recommended after surgery?

Some surgeons suggest it to help with swelling during recovery. Always follow your surgeon's advice on when to start and how often to book.

Can lymphatic drainage help with weight loss?

No. It may reduce fluid puffiness for a while, but it does not remove fat or cause lasting weight loss.
