Dermaplaning: what it is, what to expect and where to find it
What is Dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is a facial treatment in which a trained aesthetician uses a sterile surgical blade to gently scrape away dead skin cells and fine vellus hair, often called peach fuzz, from the face. It leaves skin feeling smoother and helps makeup sit more evenly.
How Dermaplaning works
The blade is held at a shallow angle and moved in short, light strokes across clean, dry skin. This removes the outermost layer of dead cells along with fine hair. Because it is a physical exfoliation, it is often combined with a facial, a light peel or hydrating masks.
What to expect at the appointment
- Cleansing and drying the skin so the blade glides evenly.
- Short, feathery strokes across the cheeks, forehead, chin and upper lip.
- A soothing serum or mask afterwards.
- Sunscreen and advice to avoid harsh products for a short while.
Recovery and downtime
Most people have no downtime, though skin may look slightly pink for a few hours and feel more sensitive to sun and active products.
Safety and suitability
- Not advised over active acne, open sores, sunburn or rashes.
- Hair grows back with the same texture; shaving does not make it thicker or darker.
- People with very sensitive skin or rosacea may react to the exfoliation.
- At-home razors are not the same as a clinic treatment with a sterile blade and trained technique.
Questions to ask before you book
- Is the blade sterile and single-use?
- Who performs the treatment, and what is their training?
- Should I pause retinoids or exfoliating products before my appointment?
- Can dermaplaning be combined with a peel or facial in the same visit?
Dermaplaning FAQ
Does facial hair grow back thicker after dermaplaning?
No. Removing fine vellus hair with a blade does not change the follicle, so the hair grows back with the same texture and colour.
How often can I get dermaplaning?
Many clinics suggest leaving a few weeks between sessions so the skin can complete its natural renewal cycle.
Is dermaplaning suitable for acne-prone skin?
It is usually avoided during active breakouts because the blade can irritate inflamed spots. People with mostly clear but congested skin may still be suitable.
