Vitamin B12 Injections: what it is, what to expect and where to find it
What is Vitamin B12 Injections?
Vitamin B12 injections deliver cyanocobalamin or methylcobalamin into a muscle. Doctors prescribe them to treat B12 deficiency, and many medical spas and wellness clinics also offer them as wellness shots, sometimes combined with other nutrients in lipotropic or lipo-B injections.
How Vitamin B12 Injections works
Vitamin B12 is needed to make red blood cells and keep nerves healthy. Injections bypass the digestive system, which helps people who cannot absorb B12 well from food. For people with normal B12 levels, the body stores or excretes extra B12, and evidence that extra injections boost energy or support weight loss is limited.
What to expect at the appointment
- A short health questionnaire, and ideally a discussion of whether a blood test for B12 makes sense.
- A quick injection into the upper arm, thigh or buttock.
- A few minutes of observation for first-time patients at some clinics.
- Advice on how often clinics suggest repeat injections.
Recovery and downtime
There is no downtime. The injection site may be sore for a short time.
Safety and suitability
- If you feel tired often, a doctor should look for the cause rather than relying on wellness shots.
- Tell the provider about allergies to cobalt or cobalamin and about kidney or eye conditions.
- Lipotropic injections contain other ingredients; ask what is in them.
- Injections should be prescribed and given in line with local rules.
Questions to ask before you book
- Should I have my B12 level tested first?
- Which form of B12 do you use?
- What other ingredients are in your lipo or wellness shots?
- Who prescribes and gives the injections?
Vitamin B12 Injections FAQ
Do B12 shots give you energy?
For people who are deficient, treatment can improve tiredness caused by the deficiency. For people with normal levels, evidence for an energy boost is limited.
Do B12 injections help with weight loss?
There is little good evidence that B12 injections cause weight loss on their own. They are sometimes included in wider programs, but they are not a weight loss treatment.
What are lipo-B injections?
They are injections that combine B12 with other compounds such as methionine, inositol and choline. Ingredients vary by clinic, so ask for the full list and talk to your doctor if you have health conditions.
